Millersville
University
January 14, 2001
The Millersville University Foreign Language High School Camp immersion
program takes place every year at MU and has been conducted for over 25
years. The camp is a week in duration and students may choose among
French, Spanish, and German language study. It is typically held near
the end of July or the beginning of August. We usually decide the dates
for the camp in February-March of the same year that the camp is to be
held. We like to base it on how late the students are in school due to
snow days, etc. We usually get about 35 students per language for that
one week, but we have considered going higher. It's usually a matter of
getting enough qualified counselors for that number of students. We try
to keep the student to counselor ratio low to give the students more
speaking opportunity.
For a copy of the information that is sent to the local high schools,
you can contact MU's Foreign Language Department directly at
717-872-3526 and ask to speak to Caroline. Also, I've been a counselor
at the French camp for the past 7 years, so you may contact me via
e-mail for more information.

Wynchemna International Language
Programmes
Located in the Canadian Rockies. In October 2002 the web site is
obviously not
complete.
One good resource is
http://www.kidscamps.com/, a commercial listing of all types
of summer camps. You can find camps that offer language instruction
(often as a part of a larger camp experience) by selecting Academic
Camps, then Languages. If you leave all the optional fields at "No
Preference" and click Search, you will see the full list of "language
camps" with web pages (18 at this writing, Sept.
1997). Scroll to the bottom of the list and you will see an option to
see the real, full list of "language camps" (73 at
this writing). Note that most of these camps teach language only as
part of a larger curriculum, and some are located out of North America.
FriendsAbroad.com
This site matches up people in
different nations via the internet, so they can practice their language
skills. Free, at least for now.
http://www.FriendsAbroad.com
The
Human-Languages Page
A comprehensive, almost overwhelming list of language-related resources
(more than 1400) on the World Wide Web. Includes online language
lessons, translating dictionaries, native literature, translation
services, software, language schools, etc. Summer camps are not
separated out, but you will find many entries under "Schools and
Institutions."

The
AuPair Alternative
Here is an interesting recommendation that I received from a
representative of EurAuPair.com: "Hosting an au pair is like having a
language camp at home – this provides excellent language learning
opportunities and cultural awareness for the kids. I am sure visitors
of your website will benefit from the information and services this
quality and family oriented website has to offer."
http://EurAuPair.com
Please send additions, reviews or corrections to Webmaster -at-
swopnet.com. Please include "Language Camps" in the Subject line. Thank
you!
Notes: Of course, you
will want to research any camp before
you send your child. Camp programs change from year to year. The author
has no
commercial interest in any of these organizations.
